About

Description

Inhibins are peptide hormones that are produced by granulosa cells in female follicles and Sertoli cells in the male seminiferous tubules. They are primarily expressed by cells of sex-cord stromal origin and play a role in the regulation of pituitary gland function by inhibiting the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

Inhibin is composed of an alpha subunit and a beta subunit that are joined together by disulfide bonds. There are two forms of inhibin, which differ in their beta subunits (A or B), while their alpha subunits remain the same. Inhibin belongs to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) family of proteins.

The Inhibin Alpha antibody has been found to be useful in differentiating between adrenal cortical tumors and renal cell carcinoma, two types of tumors that can be challenging to distinguish based on their histological features alone. Additionally, this antibody has shown cytoplasmic positivity in sex-cord stromal tumors of the ovary and trophoblastic tumors.
